When a local group seeking to build a dog park surveyed other dog owners about the issue, the numbers told the “tail.”

Of the 1,080 responses the group — the South Coastal Delaware Dog Park Foundation — received, 89 percent said they would like to see a dog park in the area.

That was good news for group organizers Frank Miranda of Ocean View and Ferne Cooper of Bethany Beach, who spoke to the Coastal Point last week about their project.

The effort got started when Miranda and Cooper met and Cooper “lamented” that she had to go to Lewes to find the closest dog park for her pooch, 3-year-old “mutt” Cosmo, Miranda said.

“One thing led to another, and we started talking about having a dog park. … That was a couple years ago,” he said.

Of the survey respondents, 71 percent said they would use a dog park at least once a week, Cooper said.

Meanwhile, despite some requests, the Bethany Beach Town Council has declined to pursue putting a dog park in town — specifically on the property occupied by the Town’s Central Park, at the intersection of Garfield Parkway (Route 26) and Coastal Highway (Route 1).

Other area towns, including Millville and Ocean View, have also chosen not to pursue the idea of dog parks within town limits. Officials have cited the costs of insurance, as well as maintenance of the property, as being prohibitive.

Under the plan being developed by the South Coastal group, dog owners would fund the cost of insurance and maintenance with yearly membership dues.
